Up and down. That is a good way to put a lot of things over the past few days.
Friday was a glorious day. After the wind and the rain and the nasty cold front that we had for two days previous, Friday was perfect. A few fish were taken mid-day, the boys stuffed themselves at our pizza cookout, the evening bite was on, big time. The 3 guys staying in cabin 6, who were here for a 5 day escape, figured they each boated 45 or 50 walleye using a combination of trolling small Rapalas (they did best with the natural grey/black colour) and jigging. Pretty good fishing.
Saturday, started with a big rain–just in time for the boat ride out, of course–then warmed up into a fine day. Bear Island produced a few afternoon walleye, which surprised me given that the water temps hand dropped significantly after the cold front, and the rock piles there tend told hold fish in July. But just as the boats were heading out for the evening fish, we were hit by a wall of wind and water out of the north. Gusts of 60 miles/hour hit us and the temperature dropped again. This cold snap was even worse, as the we were barely above the freezing point by morning, and the wind howled all day. Lots of card games by the wood stove on Sunday. A few small walleye were picked up in the evening, but generally, the fish were off. Not even the bass wanted to bite.
Here is the perspective when it comes to water surface temps, in front of the camp/Wolf Bay:
May 9 : 45 F/ 46F
June 1 : 58F/ 62F
June 6: 65F / 72 F
June 12: 49F/ 56F
See what I mean, Up and Down.
Oh, and congrats to the Pittsburg Penguins!
