From the fire to the freezer, that has been the story here this week. The temperature has been all over the place, which doesn’t make it easy on the stability-loving walleye. Still, the guys here braved the cold wind and were able to latch on to a lot of nice walleye.
Trolling was less productive than usual, whereas those jigging worms or still fishing leeches managed to be patient enough to entice strikes from the finicky pickerel. That pattern is typical of cold-front walleye. The fish are definitely in the target areas, but they really need to be coaxed into biting. Lots of misses and lost fish make for exciting stories.
Still, the catches were quite respectable. Everyone has caught and released at least one over the slot size of 20 and 3/4 inches, plus a number of keepers. The guys still fishing are boating around 15 fish on an evening. Others were boating 2 or 3. But hey, what more do you want than to eat fish every day, plus bring home a few? Sounds good to me.
