Lake Kipawa is usually a pretty fickle lake on the walleye opener, and this year was no exception. If you are looking for walleye exclusively, May is not the time to fish the North end of Kipawa. With the breeding areas closed to protect the spawning fish, and with live minnows prohibited, it makes for tough fishing. In the long run, this benefits the fishery as we have consistently good walleye fishing throughout the season.
That being said, early season fishing is great if: 1) You enjoy a blackfly and mosquito free fishing trip (at Two Moon Lodge anyway we have yet to see a blackfly) 2) you enjoy shoreline trolling with small body baits, 3) you like catching pics, lake trout, bass and whitefish all on the same lure 4) the fish tend to be larger 5) there is always the chance of a nice walleye too.
Its a great time to be at Two Moon. The lake is quiet, loons are singing, moose are swimming across the bay. Hope to see you here before long.
