There seems to be a tradition among fishermen that the Spring is the best time for a fishing trip. The walleye move into the shallows to feed on the emerging flies or spawning minnows, and there can be those magical moments that you’ll never forget. But it has been my experience over the past few years, that the summer fishing, July specifically, can actually produce more and better quality walleye than June. This year was a perfect example of that.
Over the past few weeks, we have caught (and released) more walleye here than the entire month of June. And bigger fish too. The action now is not limited to the lowlight conditions of dawn and dusk, and because the walleye have moved a little deeper and into the main lake, it opens up more opportunity of daytime fishing. Also, the fish are nor as susceptible to weather and temperature fluctuations as they are when they are feeing shallower. Not to mention, the weather itself is generally more stable in July and August.
Lately, the trollers have been doing well running Hot n’ Tots along shoreline drops and points. On Friday during a light rain and cool snap, one family boated over 20 walleye in a few hours. Those fishing bait have had more success with worms on bottom than suspended leeches this week, but that changes day to day.
Bass are not as plentiful now that they have moved off the shallow spawning areas, but still some really nice smallies were caught, plus a few decent pike. Young Sidney landed a 39″ Northern her first day here.
If you want to keep abreast with all the action here at Two Moon Lodge, be sure to join our private Facebook group, “Friends of Two Moon Lodge” where you can see all of our guest’s posts, plus a video of me landing a 25″ walleye while whistling the entire score of The Pirates of Penzance.
