A Special report by our guest bloggers, the Petrick Family.
It’s a great pleasure to be asked to be a quest contributor to the Two Moon Lodge Fishing Report! Our family descended upon Two Moon Lodge last week as we have done for the past 36 years and once again we had the “best year ever!” It was great to spend the first couple of days with Dave and Julie and we were very excited for them as they headed back to prepare for Paul’s wedding! Kip was left in charge of the camp and we assisted him in making sure all was well.
The weather for the week was fantastic. We had a high-pressure system roll in and had sun 6 out of the 7 days of our trip. Daily temperatures were 22-26 degrees, and the evenings were around 12-15 degrees. These conditions resulted in surface water temperatures of approximately 67-71 degrees.
Our typical approach to fishing Lake Kipawa is to troll with crankbait-style lures, and this year was no different. We focused on shoals, and points with significant drop-offs. It appeared that the fish had just returned to their normal spots for this time of year, and we marked many around this type of structure. We had success with our baits running around 10-12’ deep, in approximately 18-25’ of water. Using this approach, we boated a number of walleye, numerous bass, 5-6 pike, and 3 lake trout. However, traditional jigging with a worm boated a fat smallmouth for one very excited 4-year old! We kept enough fish for an amazing fish fry and the rest were released.
Interspersed with the fishing trips was some exploring, a campfire lunch at picnic island, and lots of swimming and tubing. Dave and Julie truly have created a paradise and the ultimate spot for a family vacation. The camp is outfitted very well and the equipment is top-notch. Dave and Julie have a wonderful gift of making their guests feel welcome and at home. A tradition for us is to begin the countdown to next year’s Two Moon adventure on the day that we return. 359 sleeps to go!!!
